A rapid, hard-to-interrupt stream of thoughts that often accompanies anxiety, panic, or sleep difficulty.

Definition

Racing thoughts are a subjective sense that thoughts are arriving faster than they can be tracked, often jumping between topics without clear pauses. They're common in anxiety, can occur in depression, and are a defining feature of mania when paired with elevated mood and reduced need for sleep.

What it can feel like

Multiple half-finished thoughts at once. A mind that won't slow down at bedtime. Difficulty holding a single thought long enough to follow it through. The experience often pairs with physical restlessness, racing heart, or a sense of urgency that isn't attached to any specific task.

Why it happens

Sympathetic activation speeds the cognitive system as part of the broader stress response. Working memory is engaged by threat monitoring rather than by the deliberate thought the person is trying to follow. Caffeine, sleep loss, and stimulants amplify the pattern. Treatment is usually directed at the underlying anxiety or sleep problem rather than at the thoughts themselves. Trying to suppress the thoughts directly tends to increase them; slowing the breathing, moving to a less stimulating environment, and writing the thoughts down to be reviewed later all reduce the load more reliably.

When to see a clinician

Racing thoughts that occur most days, interfere with sleep, or accompany changes in mood, energy, or sleep need warrant evaluation. The picture sometimes points to anxiety, sometimes to ADHD, and occasionally to a mood disorder; the right treatment depends on which.
