In New Mexico, you can call 988 or the New Mexico Crisis and Access Line at 1-855-662-7474 any time, day or night, and a trained counselor will answer. Adult mental health services are run by the Behavioral Health Services Division of the New Mexico Health Care Authority, while the Children, Youth and Families Department handles children's behavioral health. NAMI New Mexico and its local affiliates offer free support groups and classes, many of them online.
New Mexico runs its own 988 program, called 988 New Mexico, and it also funds a peer warmline where you can talk with a certified peer support worker when you aren't in crisis.
Much of New Mexico's specialty psychiatric care is in Albuquerque, where the UNM Psychiatric Center runs what UNM describes as the only psychiatric emergency room in the state open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The state is adding Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, which offer mental health and substance use care regardless of insurance or ability to pay, in counties such as Lea, Curry, Eddy, Doña Ana, San Juan, McKinley, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe. The Health Care Authority says it also funds mobile crisis teams meant to reach people wherever a crisis is happening. If you live far from a clinic, the crisis line, the peer warmline and 988 all work by phone from anywhere in the state, and NAMI New Mexico lists online support groups on its calendar.
