In Minnesota, the Department of Human Services handles services and supports for people with mental illness and publishes mental health crisis phone numbers by county for adults and for children. The Minnesota Department of Health runs the 988 Minnesota Lifeline grant program, and several Minnesota centers answer 988 calls, texts, and chats around the clock. NAMI Minnesota, based in St. Paul, offers free support groups and classes and a helpline at 651-645-2948, ext. 117.

If you're struggling but not in crisis, the Minnesota Warmline at 651-288-0400 or 855-WARMLINE is answered by peers from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day. Farmers and rural Minnesotans can call the Minnesota Farm and Rural Helpline at 833-600-2670 at any hour.

Minnesota's mobile crisis teams cover every county, answer calls 24 hours a day, and generally arrive within two hours, according to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Calls to 988 from Minnesota area codes go to one of several Minnesota Lifeline centers, including First Call for Help, FirstLink, and Greater Twin Cities United Way, and texts and chats are covered statewide. Academic psychiatry is centered in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota and in Rochester at Mayo Clinic. For rural residents, the University of Minnesota and CentraCare run a rural psychiatry residency that trains psychiatrists in hubs such as Willmar and Baxter/Brainerd, and the state funds agricultural mental health specialists who work with farm families at no cost.
