In Michigan, public mental health services are overseen by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and delivered locally through Community Mental Health Services Programs, nearly all of which list their own 24 hour crisis number. The Michigan Crisis and Access Line (MiCAL) is the state's central crisis line and answers most 988 calls that come from Michigan, and it also runs the Michigan Peer Warmline and the Frontline Strong Together line for first responders. NAMI Michigan, based in Lansing, offers programs such as NAMI Connection and NAMI Family Support Group and links to local NAMI affiliates around the state.
If you want to talk with someone who's been there, the Michigan Peer Warmline at 888-PEER-753 (888-733-7753) connects you with MDHHS certified peer support specialists from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Michigan's public mental health system is organized around Community Mental Health Services Programs, and the state's directory lists each one with its address, main number and crisis line, from Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network and Network180 in Grand Rapids to programs based in Houghton, Marquette and Manistique in the Upper Peninsula. MiCAL isn't meant to replace those local programs; its own guidance says CMH crisis lines give integrated crisis care to people already getting CMH services. Academic psychiatry is available through Michigan Medicine, home to an Anxiety Disorders Program for adults, and through Wayne State University's psychiatry clinics in Detroit and Livonia. NAMI Michigan links to local affiliates such as NAMI Alger/Marquette, NAMI Grand Traverse and NAMI Genesee, and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency lists eight Vet Centers, including ones in Escanaba and Traverse City.
