OCD is often misunderstood as being about neatness or order. It isn't. It's about a loop. An intrusive thought lands. The thought creates discomfort. The discomfort drives a behavior (checking, washing, counting, asking for reassurance, mentally reviewing) that briefly relieves the discomfort. The relief teaches the brain that the loop is necessary. The loop runs again.
