Trauma doesn't stay in the past. The mind moves on, but the body often doesn't. A nervous system that learned a specific event was dangerous keeps treating echoes of that event, a smell, a tone of voice, a time of day, as the same danger. The result is a cluster of experiences that often look like anxiety but are running on a different engine.
