In Oklahoma, public mental health care is run by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS), a standalone state agency that also manages the state's behavioral health Medicaid services. Calling or texting 988 in Oklahoma reaches an in state crisis line that ODMHSAS runs with Solari Crisis and Human Services, and its specialists can send a mobile crisis team or transfer you to a local clinic to book an appointment. NAMI Oklahoma runs a toll free helpline at 800-583-1264 on weekdays and lists free NAMI Connection and Family Support groups across the state, including online.
Oklahoma's Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics are required to serve everyone regardless of ability to pay, and each one must offer crisis care 24 hours a day, including mobile crisis teams.
When a call to 988 isn't enough, Oklahoma's crisis system relies on Urgent Recovery Clinics and Crisis Stabilization Units, which take walk ins around the clock, and ODMHSAS says it plans to have one of these or 24/7 outpatient services in every county with 20,000 or more people. State psychiatric hospitals are in Norman, Tulsa and Vinita, and state run community mental health centers serve areas such as McAlester, Lawton and Woodward with satellite offices in smaller towns. Academic psychiatry is based in Oklahoma City at OU Health and in Tulsa at both the OU School of Community Medicine and the OSU Center for Health Sciences. 211 covers all 77 counties, answered by Heartline in the west and the Tulsa Area United Way in the east, and farm families can use OSU Extension's farm stress resources.
